What's the difference between a salt scrub and a sugar scrub?
A sugar scrub dissolves more quickly than salt, so the rough granules don't last as long and the treatment is gentler. But no less effective: A natural body scrub with sugar contains glycolic acid, an exfoliating ingredient found in many cleansers and peels. Sugar scrubs also won't sting after shaving like salt scrubs do.
A natural body scrub with salt will have granules that dissolve more slowly (and are often larger), so it will be more abrasive; great for elbows, knees, feet, and palms, but OK all over the body if you don't have sensitive, sunburned, or windburned skin.
Whichever scrub you choose, rub with a light touch rather than an aggressive one, and follow any scrub treatment with a good moisturizing rub. When you scrub away the thick outer layer of dead skin cells, this allows moisturizing body lotion or oil to better penetrate the skin so it's more supple and hydrated. Exfoliating is also important if you get ingrown hairs from shaving or waxing, as it helps loosen them so the irritated skin can heal.
